How do I know if your the right counsellor for me?

Counsellors are plentiful but how do you choose one that's right for you. Well there's all the information on The Counselling Directory that lists the counsellors Theoretical orientation/s.
In other words what methods they will use to help you. You can also decide if you want your counsellor to be accredited or not. This is where the counsellor has had to submit written work and proof that they reach a minimum criteria and standard set by a number of the professional bodies.

Then there is the counsellors experience to consider. How long have they been working in this field? Do they have any specialist knowledge training or experience of the topics and concerns I want to discuss? The profiles on the counsellors counselling directory entry often list and address these areas.

People often say I cant decide by just looking at all of the profiles. Which is very valid, and that's why you should ring as many counsellors as you have the time too.
Choosing the right counsellor is important as you will be sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings with this person. There are initial questions you can ask to get a feel of weather or not you like the sound/tone of the counsellor such as cost/location/availability? Does the counsellor work with a set number of sessions? What approach might they take with your particular issue? Some counsellors offer reduced rate or even free initial consultations. Kind of a try before you buy. Regardless of all or any advice you may receive, choosing a counsellor and getting it right is personal to you, so as with anything else. Shop around for the one that's right for you. And if you don't get it right the first time don't despair there are plenty more to choose from. Good luck in your search.
